FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When will the fund start working on projects at Hampton or Munro?

The Munro Hampton Infrastructure Fund (MHIF) has submitted a draft Joint Venture (JV) Agreement to the school boards of Hampton School and Munro College for consideration, discussions and final agreements. The JV Agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of each party, the Canadian regulations that the MHIF must abide by and the project controls policies and procedures which must be in place for the MHIF to spend funds implementing projects outside of Canada. The MHIF Current fundraising target for 2021 is $100,000 USD ($50,000 USD per School) before it will be ready to start funding and implementing projects at the schools. The MHIF considers 50k USD a minimum starting point as the infrastructure repair needs of each school are extensive.

Who do I contact at the school if I want to donate towards the physical infrastructure now and not when the Fund is ready?

If you would like to make an immediate donation towards the Hampton School physical infrastructure needs contact board member Lenworth Blake (lenworthblake@yahoo.com). To donate an immediate donation towards the Munro College physical infrastructure needs contact board member Murphy Greg (murphy.greg@scotiabank.com) or the President of the Munro College Old Boys Association Victor Tomlinson (vtomlinson@hotmail.com).

Who is the MHIF primarily accountable to?

Registered charities in Canada are primarily accountable to the Federal Government of Canada and the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). Financial Statements of the MHIF are distributed only to donors to the MHIF, each year after annual tax returns have been filed with the Canadian Revenue Agency. The MHIF as a private Canadian Registered Charity does not share non-project specific financial statements with Hampton School, Munro College, Munro and Dickenson Trust, Jamaica National Education Trust nor the Ministry of Education. The MHIF cannot implement any project at Hampton School nor Munro College without the approved written consent of; Hampton School Board, Munro School Board, Munro and Dickenson Trust, Jamaica National Education Trust and the Ministry of Education.

Why are there no financial statements available on the MHIF website?

Currently only donors to the MHIF receive annual financial statements of the entire operations of the MHIF along with official receipts for the total donations made for the year. The MHIF will only post complete project specific financial statements online after the completion of each project.

Can a current donor of money or property to the MHIF request that their donation be returned?

As a rule, a registered charity such as the MHIF cannot return a gift. The Canadian Income Tax Act requires a registered charity to devote its resources exclusively to its charitable purposes and activities and prohibits it from making gifts to non-qualified donees. So, a registered charity that returns donated property could be regarded as making a gift to a non-qualified donee, or providing an undue benefit, which are contraventions of the Act and could result in sanctions that include revocation of registered status. Registered charities are also subject to provincial and other federal legislation, as well as common law, particularly the law of trusts, all of which might affect their ability to legally return donated property to donors.
